Jerel Johnson, owner of the Cook
Optical
On May 15, 2010,
Optician Jerel Johnson will celebrate 23 years in business
in Cook. 17 years at his present location in the Gustafson
Office Building in downtown Cook. Jerel purchased the
business from Vicki Leinoen when her Point O View Optical
business was located in the Cook Medical Clinic at the Cook
Hospital.
Twice a week Jerry has a Optometrists at
his office to examine people's eyes to diagnose vision
problems, such as nearsightedness and farsightedness, and
they test patients' depth and color perception and ability
to focus and coordinate the eyes. The Optometrists may
prescribe eyeglasses and Jerel can order the lens and
frames. Jerel is an expert in adjusting eye glass
frames to fit each individual face. He also has years of
experience reading the prescription for the best visiability
Jerel is well known for his good
service and inexpensive frames. He is always ready to adjust
or repair your eye glass frames. Even if you did not buy
your frames from him. He has earned his good reputation.
We are most fortunate having this fine
business in town as it is the only Optical shop between the
Iron Range and International Falls.

The Delich Pure Oil in 1959 ~ Picek
Union Oil, closed in 2004
May 15,2004, the
oldest gasoline service station location in Cook closed this
day. The service station by the Little Fork River and the
railroad tracks is no more. It was at this site that the
first gasoline service station in Cook was started.. Verner
Bergren sold gas at this location in 1914. A number of the
grocery stores had gasoline pumps out front but Verner had
the first business dedicated to selling gas and servicing
automobiles. Since then it was owned by Herman
Kjellberg, Eghner Edblom, Bert Helstrom, Don Delich, Irving
Brodeen and Mike Picek and his brother-in-law Russ
Pascuzzi. After Russell took over their R & M (Russ & Mike)
Hardware in 1977, Mike and his son Tim Picek operated the
station and bulk oil business. Picek's sold to Edward's Oil
Company who did not run the business for servicing
automobiles, only for gasoline. Edward's also owns the Lucky
Seven Convenience store on highway 53.
I worked at this station from September
1959 until September 1963, first for Don Delich then for
Irving Brodeen.
It was so convenient to have a full
service gasoline station in downtown Cook. This
station was located in the middle of Cook and many people
working at the hospital, the school and those coming in from
the Lake could stop for full service. It was nice for many
people to have someone else pump their gasoline so they did
not have to get out in the weather. Also for the older
people or those with a handicap.
It seems odd how some people can make a
business run so successful and the next owner cannot. Mike
and Tim Picek and Russell Pascuzzi served the people of Cook
well.
They didn't work just eight hours a day.
Now all we have are "Convenience Stores" Convenient to who?
Not the customer! It all boils down to people. People make a
business. Of course when the business was successful, the
owners were there. Now there are very few business places in
Cook that are owner operated. How many of you know who the
owners of Cook businesses are?

.
1950, 06
May, the Great Flood of 1950 as the Little Fork River
overflowed it's banks. There have been three great recorded
floods in Cook. The first in 1927, 1950 and 1970. The
flood of 1970 started on June 10, water was about a foot
deeper than in 1950. Water was over four feet deep at the
intersection of West Vermilion Drive and First Street
Southest. Many spring floods have covered streets with the
melting snow. But, the great floods were from heavy rains.
In 1970 about eight inches of rain fell. The problem, Cook
is located in a swamp. The elevation of Lake Vermilion is
1356 feet. The lowest elevation in Cook is 1301 feet and the
river only drops a few feet as it flows northwest to Canada.

2005, 05 May, Oldsmobile Division of General Motors stopped
production of automobiles after 108 years. Oldsmobile was
the oldest automobile name plate in the United States. The
first Olds was sold in 1897. The founder was Ransom Eli
Olds, also the founder of REO which produced automobiles and
trucks. He created the first automobile assemble line. Olds
became part of General Motors in 1908 when GM was founded.
Oldsmobile was the first to offer an automatic transmission,
the Hydra-matic in 1939. I still have my 98, it rides much
nicer than our new car.

In Memory of Martha
Martha C.
Schelde, 86, Cook, passed away on
Monday,
April 28, 2008, at the Cook Hospital.
Martha Catherine
Niemisto was born on
January 30, 1922, at Chassel,
Michigan; the daughter of Matthew and Margaret (Kaspala)
Niemisto. She grew up in the
Upper Penninsula
of Michigan. She married Sven
Liikamma in 1943 and moved to Tacoma, Washington and
was widowed in 1947. During the War (World War II) effort,
Martha proudly worked in the shipyards and on the aircraft
carriers, where she was a machinist’s helper. She was
blessed to find another love and married Joel
Liljeblom in 1948, and was once
again widowed in 1956. She moved to Cook in 1958, and was
united in marriage to Fred Schelde on July 2, 1958. They
then moved to Field Township, where she has since resided.
Fred also precedes her in death on April 24, 1989. Martha
ran a daycare out of her home for over 25 years, which was a
natural extension for her love of children. She was a member
of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook, a longtime member of its
choir and Rebecca Circle. She also was a member of the
Kaleva
and the Finn Singers, along with being a talented
seamstress.
Her longest and best job was that of a
devoted homemaker. We will miss
her strength, “sisu”, great
sense of humor, even when things were difficult, her strong
work ethic and her great cooking and baking. Grandma
Martha wonderfully touched all she met and will be dearly
missed. She especially loved the time spent with her
grandchildren. Her door was open to all and the coffee
pot was always on for visitors.
She is survived
by 4 sons, Sven (Dolores) Schelde of Maple Valley, WA,
Fred Schelde Jr. of Wolf Lake, MN, Marty (Ania)
Schelde of Cook, and Peter (Julie) Schelde of Angora; 3
daughters, Shirley (Frank) Hyppa
of Cook, Grace Liljeblom
of Cook and Kay (Rick) Lokken of
Lake Vermilion-Cook; 1 sister, Ida Johnson of Bay Village,
OH,; 24 Grandchildren – with another grandson due in June;
19 Great Grandchildren; her longtime dear friend Shirley
Lindgren of Cook; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to
her husbands, she is preceded in death by 2 brothers,
William Kaspala and
Arnie
Laukkanen; and a grandson, Shawn Michael Schelde.

Engine Repair Shop. The earliest record I have found of what was
located in this old building was Arnold & Alice Gustafson’s
Cheer Café from 1927 until 1940, when they moved to their new
Mecca Inn building. The Cook News Herald was in this building
until moving to their present site in 1958. Larry later moved
his business to the new log building he constructed on highway
53. He has since sold that building to a dealer of quilts.

The railroad bridge with the 1917
school house in the background
1927, 20
Apr, the first recorded Little Fork River flood in Cook with
pictures. Looks like it was about as high as the 1950 flood. The
1970 flood was the greater as much of the downtown was flooded.
The picture above is looking east from downtown. The structure
to the left is the railroad water tower as the steam locomotives
used a lot of water. The bridge was removed in 1948. The
buildings to the right were Herman Kjellbergs gasoline station,
last the Russ & Mike's station. the two story building in the
background was the school which was constructed in 1918 and torn
down in 1957.

2003, 20
Apr. The Sturgeon Store was totally destroyed by fire. It was
constructed as the Sturgeon Co-op store. Later owned by Don &
Becky Simpson, then Tardy and last by David Cullen.

Simonson bought out
Vanne

Don, Frances, Allie,
Bill
1978, April 20,
Don Simonson bought out his business partner
Bill Vanne in the Voyageur Chevrolet
dealership. They had
started the
dealership in 1973, a year after the death
of Bill Lobe.
Bill Vanne had worked for the Lobe Chevrolet
dealership since 1948 and Don since 1964.
Pictured with them were long time car
customers Allie & Frances Saari of Alango.
They were the first to purchase a new
vehicle from Don and Bill in 1973 when they
started their business, and again in 1975
when they moved into their new dealership
building on highway 53. Don named his
dealership Simonson Chevrolet-Olds, Inc. In
1988 Don sold his business to two of his key
employees, Lee and Larry Phillips. They sold
the dealership to Ken & Mary Waschke in
2007.
April 19
1979, 19
Apr. the Mighty Little Fork River overflowed it’s banks. This is
not unusual for Spring with the snow melting and a bit of rain.
The usual water level elevation of the river is 1297 feet, but
this day it was 1303 which is high but a not a major flood for
Cook. The three great floods in Cook have come from heavy rains,
not snow melting. Lake Vermilion has an elevation of 1356 so we
hope its water stays over the hill.
