Georgene Johnson, 79, of Bear River, died Thursday, Dec.
30, 2004, at the Chestnut Grove Assisted Living
Center in Virginia. She was born in Hibbing on November 19, 1925, the
daughter of Arthur and Ile (Kuster) Filbert. She grew up in Hibbing and
Field Township (near Cook), and graduated from the Alango High School in
1944. She then worked for several years for the Defense Department in
Brigham, Utah, making airplanes during the World War 11 war effort.
She returned to
the Cook area, where she raised her children. She married Duane Johnson on
August 19, 1977 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alango. They moved to Bear
River after marriage. She worked many years for the J.C. Penny Co., and also
for several business in Cook, where she was well known and liked. She and
Duane enjoyed traveling together, and were to every state except Alaska. She
was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Georgene enjoyed and
appreciated her flower gardens, and also admired other flower gardens in her
travels. She and Duane had many good times together, and liked dancing.
Georgene lived at the Chestnut Grove Assisted Living Center in Virginia the
past 2 years.
She is survived by her husband Duane; 4 sons,
Wilfred “Butch” Leinonen of Buhl, Duane (Martha)
Leinonen of Tallahassee, Fl., Dale (Vicki) Leinonen of Angora,, and Kevin
(Theresa) Johnson of Dothan, Alabama; 2 daughters, Tammy (Farley) Fox of
Britt, and Kathy (Phil) Anderson of Virginia; 1 sister,
Arline (Greg) Antus of Angora, 11
Grandchildren, and 17 Great Grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and
nephews.
She is preceded in death by her mother,
Ile in 1993, her father, Arthur in 1987,;
2 brothers, Richard Filbert in 1931, and Wesley Kuster
in 1993.
Funeral services
will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alango. Rev.
Don Guttormson will be the officiant. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m.
Monday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. The casket bearers will be: Adam
and Travis Leinonen, Paul and Dean Edstrom, and Dennis and Barry Johnson.
Spring interment will be in the Alango Township Cemetery.

Margaret
"Marge" A. King, 72, of Orr, went peacefully to be with her Lord on
Tuesday, December 28, 2004, at her residence.
She was born at
Brittmount, on January 23, 1932, the daughter of Ben and Aina (Tapanila)
Heikkila. She grew up in Brittmount, and attended high school in Alango. She
married Herbert H. King on May 8, 1948, at Orr. The couple settled in Orr,
where Marge has since resided. She attended the Orr Bible Chapel for many
years. She was the bookkeeper for the family businesses, HHM Inc. and Orr
Manufacturing. Marge enjoyed knitting, crossword and jigsaw puzzle solving,
gardening, and hardly ever missed her "story". "A special thank you to Keith
Lundin for all the help he gave our Mom."
She is survived
by 3 sons, Herbert Jr. and Michael (Anita) both of Orr, and Rodney (Rebekah)
of Bear River; 2 daughters, Francie King-Janeksela of Wichita, Kansas and
Lori King of Orr; 1 sister, Dorothy (Robert) Phillips of Florenton, Mn., 11
Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren.
She is preceded
in death by her husband of 49 years, Herbert Sr. on November 6, 1997,; 1
brother Ed Heikkila and 1 granddaughter, Shanene Janeksela.
SERVICES: Funeral
services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.
Rev. Bob Hodge will be the officiant. Spring interment will be in the
Leiding Cemetery of Orr.

John Vukelich,
84, of Orr, died Thursday, December 16, 2004, at the Cook Nursing Home.
He was born on January 9, 1920, at the Lacknow location (near Buhl); the son
of Paul and Mary (Lakner) Vukelich. He moved to Orr with his family in the
1920's. He completed 2 years of college, and had worked as a bookkeeper for
Diamond Match in the Cusson area. John served honorably in the Army during
World War 11. He married Leola "Lee" Starkey on November 13, 1958, at Holy
Cross Catholic Church in Orr. The couple made their home in Orr until moving
to Reading, Michigan in 1966. He was employed at a manufacturing plant in
that area, and retired as a supervisor. Leola died on September 17, 1985,
and he later met and married his second wife, Bessie Britton on August 14,
1987. They lived in the Reading, Michigan area, and she died on September 9,
2003. Earlier he had been an accomplished wood carver, making intricate
clocks and jewelry boxes. He also liked hunting. John moved back to the area
earlier this year, where he had been making his residence at the Cook
Nursing Home.
He is survived by
2 sisters, Anne (Norman) Toenberg and Katherine "Katie" (Wally) Zick , both
of Duluth, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to
his wives, he is preceded in death by 2 sisters, Helen Sy , and Mary
(Victor) Zgaynor who died on Dec. 17, 1995; and 3 brothers, Matt Vukelich
46, 1970, Michael Vukelich 20, 1944
(who died on Normandy Beach of France during World War 11), and Paul
Vukelich, who died in infancy.
SERVICES: Funeral
services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Fr. Larry Antus O.M.I.
will be the officiant. Interment will be in the Maplewood Cemetery, Reading,
Michigan.

Martta E.
Savela, 68, of Alango, went home to heaven, surrounded by family on
Monday, December 13, 2004, at the Cook Hospital, after a long, courageous,
battle with cancer.
She was born
Martta Eilina Selkainaho, on January 4, 1936, in Finland, the daughter of
Matti and Anna (Hyvonen) Selkainaho. She grew up in Finland where she was
united in marriage to Eino Savela in Kapyla on August 10, 1958. They came to
America, settling in Angora Township in 1961, where they raised their
children. Martta was an avid gardener, crafter, and enjoyed spending time at
the lake cabin on Vermilion-swimming, and singing while in the sauna. She
loved being with her family and was delighted to become a grandmother. She
had a proud desire to keep the Finnish heritage a part of her life and that
of her children, by fixing ethnic foods and by teaching them the Finnish
language and traditions.
She is survived
by her beloved husband of 46 years, Eino,; 2 sons, Timo Savela of Alango,
and Esko (Kathi Bowser) Savela of Nashwauk,; 2 daughters, Eila (Sam)
Goodrich of Mpls., Mn., and Anita (John Jr.) Savela-Gornik of Eveleth, Mn.;
5 brothers and sisters in Finland: Eino (Hilkka) Selkainaho, Aune (Matti)
Harjula, Liisa (Lauri) Ainasoja, Elli (Mauno) Laine, and Paavo (Raili)
Selkainaho, and 1 dear Grandchild, grandson Ian Gornick, along with numerous
nieces and nephews.
In addition to
her parents, she is preceded in death by 1 brother, Heikki Selkainaho, and 1
sister, Helvi Melanen.
SERVICES: Come
join with us in the celebration of Martta's life and her journey home.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in
Cook. Rev. Arthur Dale will be the officiant. Visitation will be for one
hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Spring interment will be in
the Alango Township Cemetery.

Elmer Matt Kesanen, logger, 91, of Britt, died
Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, in his home. He was born March 13, 1913 in Virginia
to Matt and Kristina (Mikkola) Kesanen. He grew up near Lake Vermilion and
attended school in Cook. On Nov. 21, 1936, he married Mildred H. Holkko in
Virginia. They made their home in Grand Marais, and later in Virginia and
Britt. During the years, they owned and operated the Lakeview Hotel in Grand
Marais and the Roosevelt Lunch in Virginia. He was owner of Kesanen Logging
Co. on the Echo Trail where his son now has a cabin on one of the "camp"
sites. He was one of the last loggers to run a complete old style logging
camp. He was a member of the Logger's Hall of Fame. He was in the local
carpenters union and later in the Millwright Union. He was a member of the
Sand Lake Chapel, and a life member of the Moose Club. Elmer will be greatly
missed by his large family and many friends of all ages. He entertained
their interest with stories of the "good old days," whether 9 or 90! He was
a hunter, trapper, fisherman, gardener, and avid blueberry picker, who
introduced his children and grandchildren and their families to his
passions. His garden was his pride, with family helping when he "slowed"
down somewhat. Grandpa's Christmas morning pancakes will be missed this year
at the family gathering.
Surviving are his son, Byron (Mary) Kesanen of Britt; his
daughter, Marietta "Bunny" Isaacson of Virginia; seven grandchildren, Kurt
(Barb) Kesanen of Britt, Ted (Missy) Kesanen of Britt, Jody (Michael)
Poaletti of South Grove, Christi Cothren of Zephryn, Texas, Jill (Kyle)
Morton of Coon Rapids, Paula (John) Laakkonen of Ham Lake and Erik (Traci)
Isaacson of Mandan, N.D.; 14 great-grandchildren; 2
great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Amy Ferguson) Kesanen of
Wasilla, Alaska; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Hans,
Roy and Clifford; sisters, Ilma, Irene 58, 1966 & August 66,
1963 Lappi and Evelyn; and his wife, Mildred in 1992.
SERVICES:
Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 p.m. in the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home
Chapel, Virginia. Visitation will continue Monday from 1 p.m. until the 2
p.m. funeral service in the Sand Lake Chapel in Britt. Pastor Richard Lohry
will officiate. Interment will follow in the Sand Lake Cemetery, Britt. The
family prefers memorials to the Salvation Army. Family services provided by
Bauman-Cron, A Bauman Family Funeral Home in Virginia.

Patrick Daniel
Wilenius, 19, of Cook, and current student at the College of St,
Scholastica died Saturday, December 4, 2004, as the result of an automobile
accident near Cook.
Patrick was born
in Cook on October 5, 1985, the son of Leo Jr. and Lindy (Baumgartner)
Wilenius. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook,
where he was a member and active in its youth group. At the Cook High School
he played basketball, coached youth sports, was a member of the Senior High
Choir and the National Honor Society. He worked summers at Ludlow's Resort
on Lake Vermilion and at Elbow Lake Lodge. He graduated from Cook High
School in 2004, and was a current student at the College of St. Scholastica
in Duluth. Patrick was an outdoors sportsman, and liked hunting, fishing,
camping, and loved 4-wheeling. He especially liked spending time with family
and friends, and being at the family cabin on Lake Vermilion. Patrick had a
infectious wonderful sense of humor, was outgoing, and loved people, and
will be truly missed and never forgotten by the many who knew him.
He is survived by
his parents, Leo and Lindy Wilenius of Cook; 1 brother, David of Duluth,; 1
sister, Beth (Ryan) Hartway of Maplewood, Mn.,; his maternal grandfather,
Harold Baumgartner of Cook,; paternal grandfather Leo Wilenius Sr. of
Angora,; 1 nephew, Alex Hartway,; aunts and uncles: Leonard & Leone Snyder
of Mpls., Allan & Peg Baumgartner of Littlefork, Dan & Melissa Baumgartner
of Wyoming, Mn., and Lyle & Mary Larson of Littlefork, along with numerous
cousins, and many friends.
He is preceded in
death by his maternal grandmother, Myrtle Baumgartner age 48 on November 4,
1983; and his paternal grandmother, Esther Wilenius age 76, on December 25,
1998.
SERVICES: Funeral
services will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook.
Rev. Dennis Paulson and Brenda Tibbetts A.I.M. will be the officiants.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in
Cook. Interment will be in the Cook Community Cemetery.

Dr. Walter
(Scott) Neff, 99, of Mountain Iron, died Friday, April 30, 2004, in
Duluth. He was born Oct. 13, 1904, the third of three children born to
Walter Scott Neff and Florence May Sprankle of Alexandria, Penn. He
graduated from Juniata Academy and Juniata College in Huntingdon, Penn.,
where he met and married Lois Dugan. He completed his medical training at
Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1932.
In 1938, he moved
to Virginia, where he could practice medicine in a group practice and raise
his children in a good educational environment. Dr. Neff was an internal
medicine specialist who practiced medicine for 50 years. He was one of the
earliest partners in the Lenont-Peterson clinic. He left the LP Clinic in
1979 and helped initiate a rural health clinic practice in New Hebron,
Miss., with final retirement in 1982. During his years on the Range, he was
instrumental in the establishment of the Range Mental Health Center and
Range Youth for Christ. He was active in his church, the Virginia Bible
Chapel, and Storybook Lodge Christian Camp. He was on the Virginia School
Board in the 1950s and was involved in the Gideons and Toastmasters. One of
his outdoor passions was planting and pruning trees.
He is survived by
his wife, Betty Nan Wheeler Neff; children, Sallie (Delmar) Shaffer of
Kalona, Iowa, Robert (Diane) Neff of Jefferson, Ore., David (Margaret) Neff
of Overland Park, Kan., Deborah Klein of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Kathleen Neff
of Virginia, and Scott Neff of Britt; eight stepdaughters; 15 grandchildren;
17 great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren and step
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; his first wife, Lois in 1967; his second wife, Elsa
Perala Sands in 1994; and two sons, Daniel Edward, and Phillip Andrew.

Neff, 99, SERVICES: Funeral service will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Messiah
Lutheran Church in Mountain Iron. Mr. Don McLellan will officiate.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home
Chapel, and continue at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church until the time of
the service. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia. Memorials
will be contributed to Range Youth for Christ and the local Salvation Army.

Axel G. Falk, 91, of Cook,
died last, Feb. 15, 2004, at the Cook Nursing Home. He was born February 7,
1913 in Norway. He came with his family to the United States as a child. He
graduated from the Cook High School and worked in the CCC camps in Northern
Minnesota in the late 1930s. Axel served with the 47th Bombardment
Squadron of the Army Air Corps during World War II where he was a Sergeant
and aircraft engine mechanic. He was head surveyor for St. Louis Country for
many years. He later worked in the woods and enjoyed the outdoors. He and
his brother Andrew "Andy" were talented musicians and played in the Cook
area. Axel had lived in the Homestead Apartment building in Cook for several
years and had been making the residence at the Cook Nursing Home since 1999.
He is survived by one sister, Elsie Nelson of Tower, and numerous nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by on brother Andrew; and two sisters,
Mary Trucano and Emma Duame. |

Bertha
(Silverdahl) Davis 82, passed away at Sandpoint, Idaho on April 10,
2004. Bertha was born in Sweden to John 93, 1982 & Selina 110, 2001 Silverdahl.
She left Sweden with her parents when she was three months old, they settled
30 miles northwest of Cook in a community named after the family,
Silverdale. Bertha lived at Spokane, Washington for several years and
worked as a cook. She owned several restaurants during her life. She retired
from the Park Cafe. She lived at Cocolalla, Idaho until 1995. She moved to
Sandpoint after the death of her husband Arnold in December 1994.
Bertha was
preceded in death by her husband Arnold in 1994, son Ivan Abell, her
parents, a sister Karen 80, 1998 (Wayne) Metsa,
brothers; Henry Silverdahl 75, 1994 and Lawrence
Silverdahl 69, 2003.
Bertha is
survived by sons; Roger in Spokane, Bruce in Kelso WA, daughters; Darlene
(Les) Norton of Spokane WA and Joanne Monda of Sandpoint ID, Carol (Frank)
Wolfram of Sagle ID.

Robert L.
Moore, 75, of Virginia, entered into the presence of the Lord on April
23, 2004, at St. Michaels Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia. He
was born on July 23, 1928, in Atlanta, Ga., to Leonard and Lillie (Harris)
Moore Sr. He graduated from West Fulton High School in 1946. He attended
Georgia Military Academy and the Minnesota Junior College in Eveleth. He
served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952. He was stationed in Japan and
Korea.
Following his
discharge from the Army, he married Jeanne Deanne Anderson on Dec. 27, 1952,
in Virginia. Bob worked as an electrician and electrical foreman for USX,
retiring in 1984. Following his retirement, he drove school bus for the
Mountain Iron Buhl School District for seven years. He was an active member
of the Emmanuel Baptist Church,
serving in
various positions. He taught Sunday school for many years and served on the
deacon and trustee boards. Currently he was a member of the congregational
care team. Bob shared his life in a very unique way as a mentor and friend
to many younger men. He loved the Lord and it was his desire to honor and
serve Him.
Robert is
survived by his wife, Jeanne Deanne; son, Glenn (Kristen) of Gilbert;
daughter, Donna (Paul) Scholtus of Minneapolis; sister, Barbara Wood and
son, Timothy, of Cumming, Ga.; brother-in-law, Waldon Anderson of Virginia;
grandchildren, Chloe and Justin Scholtus of Minneapolis, and Christian and
Mia Moore of Gilbert. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son,
Dale, on April 7, 1994.
Robert L. Moore, 75, SERVICES: A
funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Emmanuel Baptist
Church in Virginia. The Rev. John Cowan will officiate. Visitation
will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia and
will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in
Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia. |

Dean A. Bundy,
68, of Buyck, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at his home, after a battle
with cancer. He was born on June 13, 1935, in Long Prairie, Minn., to Donald
and Bernice (Determann) Bundy. He grew up and attended school in Long
Prairie. Dean was a member of the U.S. Air Force. On June 24, 1967, he
married Donna Sokoloski in Buyck. He and his wife co owned Bundy's Wayside.
He also was a foreman for St. Louis County. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and
his sawmill. He was a member of American Legion Post 480 of Orr and its
color guard.
Dean is survived
by two sons, Jay (Barbara) Bundy of Tomah, Wis., and Jarrett Bundy of Buyck;
two grandchildren, Tyler and Kendra Bundy; two brothers, Wayne (Anita) Bundy
of Bovey, Minn., and Gary Bundy of Gheen, Minn.; and numerous nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna; his parents; and a
sister, Janice.
Dean A. Bundy,
68, SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St.
Josephs Catholic Church in Buyck. The Rev. Larry Antus will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church and will
continue one hour prior to the service Thursday. Burial will be in the
Forest Home Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Range Funeral Home in

Kathryn L.
Benn Cole, 81, of Cook, died Monday, April 19, 2004, at the Cook Nursing
Home. She was born on December 2, 1922, at St. Paul, Minnesota, the daughter
of Arthur and Louise (Fligge) Larsen. She grew up in Duluth and graduated
from Duluth Central High School. She married Sydney Benn on April 14, 1957,
at Billings, Montana. She lived in the Minneapolis area, then in North
Dakota for 10 years, before settling in Cook in 1966. She had spent winters
at Mission, Texas for over 25 years. Kathryn was a member of the First
Congregational Church in Cook, and enjoyed singing, playing the organ, and
was an avid reader. Sydney died in 1990, and she later married Clarence
Cole, who also precedes her in death.
She is survived
by 2 daughters, Nancy (Roger) Lindbeck, and Karen Benn, both of Cook,; 2
Granddaughters: Jennifer Brandon of Davis, Calif., and Heather Brandon of
Cook; and 1 great grandchild, Aurora Brandon-Newberg.
She is preceded
in death by husbands, Sydney Benn in 1990, Clarence Cole in 2002,;
granddaughter, Cassandra "Cassie" Brandon on April 22, 2000, ; and brother
John A. Larsen.
SERVICES:
Memorial services will be April 21 at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Mlaker Funeral Home
in Cook. Rev. Reuben Rosnau will be the officiant. Interment will be in the
Cook Community Cemetery.

Lulubelle
"Lulu" Lee, 83, of Cook, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at the Cook
Nursing Home. She was born at Cook on May 24, 1920, the daughter of Henry
and Lena (Ness) Knutson. She grew up in Cook, and lived there most of her
life. During World War 11 she worked at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle,
Washington. She married Arne Lindgren on June 19, 1942 in Tacoma WA, he died
Sep 7, 1974 at the age of 59.. She later married
Melvin Lee on May 21, 1983, in Cook, he died on Sep 16, 1997 at the age of
82. Lulu
worked at the Cook Hospital and Nursing for 25 years, retiring in 1985. She
was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Cook V.F.W.
Auxiliary. Lulu loved helping people, and was always willing to lend a hand.
She also enjoyed flowers and gardening.
She is survived
by 1 daughter, Judy Roy of West Palm Beach, Fl., ; one brother, Robert
(Marvel Benson) Knutson of Cook,; one sister, Gladys (Harold) DuMarce of Cook,; and
one
granddaughter, Christina Roy of Boulder, Colo.
In addition to
her two husbands, she is preceded in death by one son, John Lindgren on Oct
21, 1984 at the age of 36,

Paul Raymond
Babiracki, 53, of Cook, formerly of Virginia, died Thursday, April 1,
2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was born Nov. 27,
1950, to Raymond and Doris (Ikola) Babiracki in Virginia. He grew up and
attended schools in Virginia, participating in football, basketball, and
track, and was a 1969 graduate of Virginia High School.
He was united in
marriage to Debra Jangwirth on Dec. 31, 1972. Paul was an executive for
Combined Insurance Company of America for 30 years, retiring in 2002 to
operate the Head-O-Lake Resort, on the Cook end of Lake Vermilion, which he
owned and operated for the past nine years. Paul was a devoted family man,
spending time with his two sons and wife. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and
being outdoors. He was a member of the Lake Vermilion Resort Association.
He is survived by
his wife, Debbie of Cook; two sons, Joe (girlfriend Julie) Babiracki of
Champlin, Minn., John Babiracki of Maple Grove, Minn.; mother, Doris

Sunday at Range Funeral Home in Virginia and continue from 2 p.m. until the

Axel G. Falk, 91, of Cook,
died Sunday, February 15, 2004, at the Cook Nursing Home. Axel was born on
February 7, 1913 in Norway. He came with his family to the United States as
a child. He graduated from the Cook High School, and worked in the CCC camps
in Northern Minnesota in the late 1930's.
Axel served with the 47th
Bombardment Squadron of the Army Air Corps during World War 11, where he was
a Sergeant and aircraft engine mechanic. He was head surveyor for St. Louis
County for many years. He later worked in the woods, and enjoyed the
outdoors. He and his brother Andrew "Andy" were talented musicians, and
played for numerous dances and events in the Cook area. Axel had lived in
the Homestead Apartment Building for several years, and has been making his
residence at the Cook Nursing Home since 1999.
He is survived by 1 sister, Elsie
Nelson of Tower, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by
1 brother, Andrew; and 2 sisters, Mary Trucano and Emma Duame. Arrangements
are with the Mlaker Funeral Home, Cook.
SERVICES: Graveside services will be held this spring at the Cook
Community Cemetery.

Patricia
Louise Skraba 62 of Eveleth, Minn., died peacefully surrounded by family
at her daughter's home in Coon Rapids on Feb. 13, 2004. She resided in
Eveleth for nearly 40 years and was well known in the area through her
community involvement. An active member of Resurrection Catholic Church, she
held office at the state and local levels of Catholic Daughters of the
Americas. She volunteered with AEOA and the North St. Louis County Habitat
for Humanity, where she served as a board member. She graduated with honors
from Alango High School, Virginia Junior College, and Mankato State College
and enjoyed membership in Phi Theta Kappa. She taught English and French in
area schools. Following this career, she was able to indulge her passion for
writing while working for the Eveleth Gilbert Range Scene.
She was preceded
in death by her parents, Leo and Elizabeth Sarazine, infant sister Margaret,
and brothers
Bernard and
Raymond. She is survived by son David, of Prior Lake, Minn.; daughter and
son-in-law Michelle and Tim Briski, of Coon Rapids, Minn., daughter and
son-in-law Becky and Joe Cerar of Rochester, Minn., daughter Jennifer Rich,
of Eveleth. She is also survived by her six cherished grandchildren, Aaron
and Allison Briski, Frank and Mark Cerar, and Larissa and Elizabeth Rich.

(Karen) of Owatonna, Minn., Michael (Michelle) of Layton, Utah, sisters

Eveleth.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home
Eveleth, with a parish rosary at 7 p.m. and continue one hour prior to the
mass at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be at the Eveleth Cemetery.

Helen Irma
(Mattson) Barnes, 90, of Mora MN died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, in the
Villa Health Care facility there, She was born Mar. 29, 1913 in Virginia MN
to Oscar William and Martha Jenni (Kangas) Mattson formerly of Linden Grove.
She graduated from Virginia North High School and continued study at Duluth
Teachers College obtaining a teachers certificate in 1933. She married John
T. Barnes Aug 25 1935. They lived in Gonvick MN for a short time and then
moved to Mora MN where they lived for many years while John taught
Vocational Agriculture in the high school and Helen taught at various
Kanabec County Country (one room) grade schools. They were seasonal Lake
Vermilion residents since 1956.

Charles Henry
Vidor, age 83, of Minneapolis, and formerly of International Falls, died
Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at the University Good Samaritan Center in
Minneapolis.
He was born July
21, 1920, in Rauch, Minn., where he attended school until the 8th grade. He
enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces where he served in the army infantry. He
served from 1939 to 1946 in Newfoundland and also in Europe.
Charles was
decorated with the Purple Heart and honorably discharged as a second
lieutenant. He married the former Florence Starich from Greaney, Minn., on
May 14, 1939. She survives. They resided in International Falls from 1947.
He began working
for Mando Paper Company in the pulp yard in 1947 and retired from Boise
Cascade from the Guard Force in 1983 after 36 years of service.
He enjoyed
working in his yard and garden, and belonged to St. Thomas Catholic Church
and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was preceded
in death by his parents, Peter and Mary (Chernivec) Vidor, four
brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by
his wife Florence of International Falls; one son, Brian and wife Susan
Vidor of International Falls; one daughter, Brenda Mammenga of Woodbury,
Minn.; grandchildren, Melissa and husband Chris Brandt of Woodbury, Matthew
and wife Paula Mammenga of Oakdale, Kristen and husband Richard Busch of
Eveleth, Nicholas Vidor of International Falls and three
great-grandchildren.
He is also
survived by a brother, Frank Vidor of Mission, Texas, and a sister,
Jean Jones, of Zion, Ill.
There will be no
visitation. Private family services will be conducted with flag
presentation at Green-Larsen Memorial Chapel with Fr. Roger Bergkamp, OMI,
officiating.
Interment will be
in the Veterans of Foreign Wars section of Forest Hill Cemetery.

Leonard Arola,
94, of Virginia died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at St. Michaels Health and
Rehabilitation Center
in Virginia.
He was born June
18, 1909, to Markus and Hanna (Nelimarkka) Arola in Angora, where he grew up
and attended school. He was a World War II veteran with the rank of
corporal, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps, 16th Bomber Group, in the
South Pacific. On Aug. 9, 1947, he married Mary Rebrovich in Keewatin. He
worked as a logger and heavy equipment operator and retired in 1973 as a
welder from the National Steel Pellet plant in Keewatin.
Survivors include
a son, John (Mabel Ruotsi) Arola, of Virginia; two grandchildren, Karl
and Mary; a brother, Elmer (Helen) Arola, of Virginia; a sister, Edna
(Andrew) Kaurala, of Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded
in death by his wife, Mary; parents; brothers, Hans, Matt, Marcus and

Faye M. Cin,
85, of Cook, died Sunday, January 25, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center
in Duluth. Faye was born at Badoura Township in Hubbard County on December
1, 1918; the daughter of William and Nellie (Rummins) Collins. She grew up
there and was united in marriage to John Cin on February 12, 1938 at Detroit
Lakes. Following marriage the couple made their home in Detroit Lakes for
several years, then lived in the Twin Cities area for many years, settling
in Greaney in 1956. Her husband John was a "class A" auto mechanic. Faye has
resided in Cook since 1962, and has lived in the Pioneer Apartment Building
for over 20 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook and
its Rebecca Circle. She was also a longtime proud member of the Cook V.F.W.
Auxiliary Post #1757. Faye enjoyed sewing, and was a wonderful baker and
cook.. She was a happy and caring person who always has a smile on her face
and optimistic view of life.
She is survived
by 2 sons, John (Diane) Cin of Cook and Alvin (Judy) Cin of Blaine, 2
daughters, Sherryl (William) Lewis of Bloomington, and Arlene (Roger)
Wolpern of Chaska, Mn.; 11 Grandchildren, and 20 Great Grandchildren.
She is preceded
in death by her husband, John in 1976; 3 brothers, William, Nial, and Louis
Collins; 6 sisters, Alice Kautz, Ruby Evans, Rose Rice, Flossie Tibbets,
Pattie Seward, and Annabell Gebhard,; and a granddaughter Jody Cin in 1972.

Freeman Treloar, 77, formerly of Buhl died Tuesday, Jan. 27,
2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 29, 1926, to Freeman and Iris (Lindquist)
Treloar in Duluth. He grew up and attended school in Buhl,
graduating from Martin Hughes High School. He was an Army veteran of
World War II serving in Luzon, Philippine Islands. He married
Elizabeth Miletich on Aug. 30, 1947, in Chisholm. They lived in
Chisholm until 1963, when they made their home in Buhl. He worked
for C.W. Moore Contractor, Snyder Underground Mine and retired from
Austin Powder on July 1, 1994. He was a member of the Local
Teamsters 49ers, Yoki-Bergman American Legion Post 220 and the Cook
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1757.
Surviving are his three daughters, Mary Jane (Charlie) Traux of
Medford, Minn., Carol (Michael) Downs and Patricia (Bob) Brenton,
both of Mountain Iron; two sons, Terry (JoAnn) Treloar of Bear River
and Billy (Deb) Treloar of Kinney; 12 grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Treloar, of Chisholm.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, James ""Bimbo,’’’’
in 1977; his wife, Betty, on Dec. 3, 1992; and a brother, Howard.
Funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at the Range Funeral Home in

John B. Elias, 92, of died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, in Coon Rapids,
Minn. John was born in Virginia on Nov. 4, 1911, the fifth of 11 children
born of his parents, John and Anna Elias. He attended the local schools
there. He married Marcella Gussman on Aug. 3, 1936, in Virginia. During
World War II, John enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the South
Pacific. John was employed in 1934 by Red Owl Stores and retired in 1976
from that corporation. He served Red Owl in Fargo, N.D. and in Virginia,
Crookston, and Worthington, Minn. He had served on the city council in
Virginia and was a past-president of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce. John
was the recipient of the National Good Citizenship Award in 1956 which was
presented to him in Washington, D.C., by the National Association of Food
Stores. This was granted on the basis of outstanding participation in
community and church activities including civic and school affairs, local
and national issues and government for the betterment of the community. He
also headed the Senior Corps of Retired Executives (S.C.O.R.E.) group in
Worthington. John was active in both the Knights of Columbus and Fourth
Degree Knights.
John is survived by a son Jack of Sanibel Island, Fla.; daughters,
Katherine Helgeson of Boise, Idaho, and Virginia Goor of Coon Rapids, Minn.;
10 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, two brothers, George of Long
Beach, California and Raymond of St. Paul, and one sister, Helen Wicklund of
Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella; his brothers, Jim and
Joe; and his sisters, Sophie, Olga Larson, Rose Reed, Mary Bergman and Ann
Carlson.

Judith A. Kampa, 54, of
Britt died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, peacefully at her home surrounded by her
family after a long illness. She was born May 19, 1949, in
Shakopee to Matt and Louise (Intihar) Urick. She grew up in Biwabik and
graduated in 1967.
Judy attended Mesabi Junior
College and Bemidji State, graduating in 1971. She worked for the
Yellowstone Park Co. and Ketolas Department Store and was a caregiver at the
Eveleth Nursing Home while attending college. Judith was united in marriage
to Richard Kampa on May 12, 1972, in Eveleth. She was an elementary
education teacher for the St. Louis County School System and Director of Day
Care Head Start Program at Nett Lake. In 1976, she started with the U.S.
Postal Service as a letter carrier in Virginia to the present. Judy shared
many hobbies with her husband Rick, camping, canoeing, boating, fishing,
hunting, archery, photography, scuba diving, and developing their
recreational property. Judy had a great appreciation for art through her
friend, Bonnie. She also loved traveling in pursuit of her hobbies.
Survivors include her husband,
Richard; two sisters, Dorothy (Gene) Roots of Arizona and Betty (Tony)
Chos of Cook; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death

Gladys (Hill) O. Braff, 89, Duluth, Minn., died Thursday, January 1,
2004, at the Longview House. She was born in Angora, Minn., on September 30,
1914, to John and Clara Hill and was a member of the first graduating class
from Cook High School. In Duluth she had worked as a telephone operator for
N.W. Bell, U.S. Customs and finally retired in 1976 from the U.S. Park
Service. Gladys married George W. Braff in Duluth on February 11, 1939. She
was a past member of Salem Lutheran Church, and had been a Brownie Leader in
Piedmont Heights.
Her parents; and brother, Roy S Hill of Cook, preceded her in death. She
is survived by her husband, George W.; daughters, Gail McKenna, Vancouver,
Wash., Linda Grann, Rochester, Minn.; brothers Clifford Hill, Bend, Ore.,
Gene (Beth) Hill, Trail, Ore.; sisters, Laverne Avery, Duluth, Elaine

Charles "Chuck" W. Stahl Jr., 80, died on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at
St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, following coronary surgery.
He was born on May 13, 1923, in Eveleth. He was raised in Britt, attended
school at Sand Lake, Idington, and graduated from Virginia High School in
1941. He then graduated from Virginia Junior College. He served during World
War II as a bombardier in the U.S. Air Corps. Following war time service,
Chuck was a member of both the U.S. Air Force Reserve, attaining the rank of
Major; and the Army National Guard. He served a total of 38 years in the
Military.
United in marriage to Olive Murphy on Oct. 7, 1950, the Stahls made their
home in Virginia. Together they raised four children. Chuck worked with his
brothers at the family business, Stahl’s Furniture and Upholstery, for 39
years. He worked in sales, delivery and interior design.
Charles was involved in several community organizations. He was a
long-time member of Hope Community Presbyterian Church in Virginia and a
member of Kiwanis for more than 50 years, holding various offices, including
Lt. Governor of Minnesota. Other organizations he belonged to included the
Gideons, Royal Arch Masons, Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons
of Minnesota, Shriners, Shriners Hospital (Hospital Dads in Minneapolis),
Ver-Saba Shrine, AAD Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. Sno-Sled Patrol, American Legion,
Veterans of Foreign Wars, United Commercial Travels, president of Camp
George E. Siegel, Red Cross First Aid Instructor, volunteering as a
Salvation Army Bell Ringer, St. Louis County Safety Committee, the Venture
Capitol Investment Club, Iron Range Historical Society, Sportsman’’s Club of
Lake Vermilion, the Retired Officers and Retired Officers Association
Retirement Council, Meals on Wheels, YMCA, Vidalia Onion sales for the
Shriners, and a participant in the Land of the Loon each year with the
Shriners and Kiwanis. Charles had other hobbies that included spending time
at their summer cabin on Lake Vermilion, and at the hunting shack on Hoodoo
Lake.
Charles is survived by his wife of 53 years, Olive; their four children,
Bruce Stahl of Virginia, Daniel (Renae) Stahl of Virginia, Veronica (John)
Johnson of Hoyt Lakes, and Deborah (Joseph) Dolence of Eveleth; two
brothers, Raymond C. (Marjorie Ann) Stahl of Britt, and Donald A. (Beverly)
Stahl of Britt; seven grandchildren, Erik (Amy) Johnson of Biwabik, Kristen
(Kenneth) Johnson of Aurora, Brian Stahl of Bemidji, Michael Stahl of
Virginia, Elizabeth Stahl of Superior, Joseph Dolence of Duluth, and Stephen
Dolence of Eveleth; one great-grandchild, Jaden Emmanuel, and another
expected in June to Kristen and Kenneth Johnson; numerous nieces and
nephews; two of the best buddies he could have hoped for, Teto Gianlorenzi

Mabel A. King,
78, of Nett Lake, died Monday, January 12, 2004, at the home of her
daughter, Kim King, in Angora, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on
March 23, 1925, at Mahnomen, Minn., the daughter of Romain and Rose (Saice)
Villebrun. When she was 15 years old, she moved with her family to Nett
Lake. She married Donald King on October 22, 1946, in Duluth. Mabel was a
devoted Catholic, and participated on the Elder Committee of the Bois Forte
Reservation.
She enjoyed
gardening, cooking, fishing, sewing, baking, bingo, trips with the Elders,
and especially spending time with her family and special friends. Mabel will
truly be missed and fondly remembered by many. She was the last surviving
sibling of her 13 brothers and sisters. "We Love you Mom, Grandma, and Great
Grandmother"
She is survived

16th), at the Nett Lake Community Center. Fr.
Raymond Kirtz, O.M.I., will be the celebrant. Visitation will be after 4:00
p.m. Thursday at the center. The casket bearers will be Mabel's grandsons:
Wesley King, Cory King, Jesse Richter, Rocky King, Wayne King, and Charlie
Myhre. Interment will be in Nett Lake. Arrangements are with the Mlaker
Funeral Home, Cook.

Russell J.
Cornelius, 68, of Togo, died Sunday, January 11, 2004, at the Cook
Hospital. He was born on May 25, 1935, at Genesee, Pennsylvania; the son of
Rev. A. Clyde and L. Elaine (Dimmick) Cornelius. He grew up in Wellsville,
New York. He moved to Perry, New York, where he met and married Audrey D.
Ballard on January 9, 1954. Russell was employed for many years at the
Robeson Cutlery Company in Perry, where he was a foreman. He then worked for
the Almor Corporation, which made steel shelving products. He retired due to
health reasons, then moved to Togo in 1976. He was a longtime member of the
Lakeview Baptist Church in Orr. Russell was a lifetime devoted Viking fan,
and also enjoyed feeding the birds and bird watching.
He is survived by
his wife, Audrey,; 3 sons, Robhin , Russell "Rusty" (Rhonda), and Randy, all
of Togo; 1 adopted son, Ron (Sheila) Kingdom of Hibbing; 3 sisters, Mary
(Raymond) Lee of Perry, N.Y., Cecile Diebler of Virginia, and Catherine
(Jim) Powers of Togo,; 4 Grandchildren, 1 Great Grandson, and special
sisters-in-law, Mary (Ted) Bird of Hibbing, and Pat Ballard of Warsaw, N.Y.,
; and 2 special brothers-in-law, Ron Ballard of Warsaw, N.Y., and Dee
Ballard of Togo, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and Russ's faithful
pet dog Freddy.
He is preceded in
death by his father, Rev. A. Clyde Cornelius in 1976, his mother, L. Elaine
Cornelius in 1989, and one brother, Darrell Cornelius in 1995.
SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday
at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. Rev. Jim Rockensock will be the
officiant. A gathering of family and friends friends will be one hour prior
to the service at the funeral home. The honorary casket bearers will be:
Tim Cornelius, Brian Cornelius, Bob Cornelius, Jimmy Powers, Lars Gabrielson,
Nels Gabrielson, and Eric Gabrielson. Interment will be in the Carpenter
Cemetery, Itasca County.

Melia Jacobson, 91, of Cook, formerly of
Idington, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at the Cook Hospital. Melia was born
on October 27, 1912, at Idington, the daughter of John and Anna (Jusola)
Kinnunen.
Melia grew up in Idington, and was united in
marriage to William Jacobson on July 30, 1931, at Virginia. The couple
settled in Alango, where William built their home. In 1943, they moved to
a farm in Field Township, where Melia made her home for many years. She had
lived in Portland, Oregon from 1962 to 1967, where William sought
employment. While in Portland, Melia at the age of 50 completed the Licensed
Practical Nurses Program. They moved back to the Cook area in 1967, and she
was a nurse at the Cook Hospital from 1967 to 1983.
In 1996, Melia moved to the Pioneer Apartments
in Cook, and for the past year and half has resided at the Cook Nursing
Home. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Cook, and
earlier belonged to the former Reader’s Club in Alango. Melia handcrafted
numerous beautiful quilts for her family, and also loved reading, knitting,
and enjoyed working cross-word puzzles. She will be always remembered as a
loving grandmother, and always willing to help in any way when asked.
She is survived by 3 sons, Kermit (Carol) of
Yakima, Wash., Warren (Connie) of Corcoran, Mn., and Paul (Celina) of
Portland, Oregon; 1 daughter, Anne (Ron) Kruger of Yakima, Wash.,; 18
Grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren, 1 Great Great Granddaughter,; 1
brother-in-law, Robert Jacobson of Silver Bay,; 2 sisters-in-law Signe
(Alger 72, 1992) Jacobson and Ann (Carl
81, 1991) Jacobson, both of Cook.
Melia is preceded in death by her husband,
William on February 6, 1983; 1 brother, John Kinnunen, ; and 7 sisters,
Selma Line, Anna Twa, Ina Metso, Ethel Rankila, Lillian Bergquist, Eleanor
Kinnunen, and Tyne Tapinala.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m Tuesday, at the First Baptist Church in
Cook. Rev. Dennis Sundeen will be the officiant. Visitation will be one
hour prior to the service at the church. The soloist will be Kathy Forsline
and the organist Lorraine Walker. The casket bearers will be grandchildren:
Dan Jacobson, Kevin Jacobson, Kristin Hocker, and Tana Winterholler. The
interment will be the Hillside Cemetery in Angora.
Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home,
Cook.

Edward G. Frost, 80, of
Babbitt and formerly of Orr, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at the
Virginia Regional Medical Center. He was born on May 10, 1923, in
Minneapolis, to Edwin and Gladys (Gerrard) Frost. He attended school in
Gheen and Orr. Edward was a World War II veteran of the Army Corp. of
Engineers in the South Pacific. Following his discharge, he moved to the
Iron Range area. On Oct. 30, 1943, he was united in marriage to Elvie
Maki in Virginia. They moved to Babbitt in 1956, where he presided until
his death. He worked for the railroad and underground mining industry
for his entire life, retiring in 1985. Edward loved to take care of his
yard and home and enjoyed camping and fishing with his family.
Ed is survived by his wife, Elvie;
two sons, Steven Frost of Des Moines, Iowa, and Bradley Frost of
Babbitt; two daughters, Sherry Erickson of Babbitt, and Patricia Whight
of Superior, Wis.; grandchildren, David, Patrick, Mellisa, Angela, Greg
and Sean, all of Des Moines, Iowa, Scott of Minneapolis, and Brian of
Pease, Minn.; two great-grandchildren of the Des Moines area; three
brothers, John (Alice) Frost of Esko, Minn., Robert Frost of Grantsburg,
Wis., and Russell (Sherry) Frost of Maidenrock, Wis.; two sisters,
Veronica Rice of Beloit, Wis., and Ruth Burnett of Superior, Wis.; and
two special nieces and nephews, Kenny (Lilla) Olson of South Range,
Wis., and Eddie (Maggie) Olson of Pineyville, Ky. He was preceded in
death by his parents; and one son, Jeffery.
Private family services will be
held in the spring. Arrangements are with the Range Funeral Home of
Virginia.

Leo Lorbiecki 89 of Britt, Minnesota passed away Jan 3, 2004 at the
Virginia Hospital. He is survived by his wife June. One son Jerry of Grand
Rapids, Minnesota. Two granddaughters; Debra (Matt Jones) Lorbiecki of
Blomington, Minnesota and Kim (Erick Geer) Lorbiecki of Starkville,
Mississippi. Per Leo's request there will be no services. |

Florence W. Nakari, 78, of Cook, died
Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at the Cook Nursing Home. She was born on December
29, 1925, at Linden Grove Township, the daughter of Joseph and Hannah (Lintula)
Aune. She grew up in Linden Grove, and at the age of 16 went to
California and worked as a welder in the shipyards during World War
11. After the war, she returned to the Cook area, where she has
since resided. Florence was affiliated with the Lutheran
Church. She had worked at the former Cook Co-op Creamery and the
Christmas Tree Factory in Cook. Florence has been making her residence
at the Cook Nursing Home the past 15 years. She was known as the M & M
lady, as she always had them to kindly offer her visitors.
Florence was also known as the “mail lady” at the Nursing Home, as she knew
the schedule of mail and made sure the other residents had their mail
distributed to them. Florence also enjoyed bingo, and took an active
part in the many activities held.
She is survived by 1 son, Douglas Nakari of
Finland, Mn.; 2 daughters, Holly (Rick Malmstrom) Abramson of Cook, and
Jody (Mike) Feist of Cook,; and 4 Grandchildren: Travis & Justin Abramson,
and Katelynn & Melina Feist.
She is preceded in death by one sister in
childhood, Betty Joanne Aune.
Funeral
services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.
Rev. H. Arthur Dale will be the officiant. Visitation will be one hour
prior to the funeral. The casket bearers will be: Mike McCue, Ole Swanson,
Rocky Streeter, and Doug Nakari. Interment will be in the Cook Community
Cemetery.

Felix W.
Peltonen, 87, of Cook died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at the Cook Community
Hospital in Cook. He was born on March 7, 1916, to Jacob and Hilma (Kontio)
Peltonen in Alango where he grew up and attended school. He was a World War
II veteran serving in the U.S. Army. On June 20, 1949, he married Alvira
(Czernewski) Luety in Virginia. Following marriage, they made their home in
Idington.
Survivors include
one son, Bruce Peltonen of Excelsior, Minn.; one grandson, Bruce Allen
(Myrna) Peltonen of Belle Plaine, Minn.; one granddaughter, Brenda Maye
(Brandt) Vinkemeier of Belle Plaine; six great-grandchildren; three sisters,
Adeline (Ernest) Knutson of Virginia, Ellen Halverson of Hibbing and Lila
Korpi of Washington state; and one brother, Uno (Lillian Latikka) Peltonen
of Minneapolis.
He was preceded
in death by his wife, Alvira (Czernewski, Luety) Peltonen 80,
1996, his parents; and four brothers.
Visitation will
be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia and will
continue Monday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service at the
funeral home. Pastor Jeffrey Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the
Idington Cemetery. |
